10 Silent Days: My Vipassana Meditation Experience

I set the goal at the beginning of 2016 to intentionally seek out one new experience every month… I called it my “YOLO List.” This was one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself and I’ll definitely keep it up in 2017. Below is a list of what I’ve been up to – this color font indicates it was something that scared me. It is worth mentioning that those (scary!) things were the ones I’m especially glad I did.
A few months ago I began asking myself, “As a kid, what did I truly love doing for the sake of doing it?” In addition to ‘recording myself reading excerpts from Reader’s Digest‘ – acting came to mind. Plus, I am basically living in Hollywood, so I figured the time would never be more right!
When I was 14 years old, my parents arranged a house exchange to Fiji. It took 2 days, 3 planes, and a 4 hour bus ride. While I had traveled a little bit before this, it was the first time I had ever found myself so not “at home.” We spent a month living in another family’s house, driving their car, visiting their school, and sleeping in their beds. Seeing inside their life made me curious about how other people in other places lived. This was when I became infected with the travel bug.
Since then, I’ve been to 28 countries in my 28 years; my goal is to make it to 30 countries before turning 30.
